British Petroleum stock has been down more
than 40% since the Deepwater Horizon disaster first began in
April.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday,
June 12, on a range of scenarios including bankruptcy, takeover by
another company, or a full recovery.
The WSJ reports that political pressure likely
won’t push BP into bankruptcy because the company needs to continue
generating cash to help pay for the cleanup. The
newspaper added that bankruptcy is unlikely because the oil
giant should have little trouble servicing its
debts.
BP officials plan to meet with President Obama at the
White House next week to respond to Mr. Obama’s criticism over the
company still paying dividends. BP is expected to offer a temporary
dividend cut.
Financial adviser, author, and talk show host,Ric Edelman discussed the article on his
radio program on Saturday, June 12. The Ric Edelman show is
broadcast locally in the San Francisco Bay Area on KSFO 560 AM. Edelman noted that
reducing or eliminating dividends could ultimately hurt many small
investors and retirement plans in this country.
Andrew Lees, a portfolio manager atInvesco Advisers, told the WSJ that BP’s stock
"could be dead money for a while."
Others have speculated that the stock could be a good buy now and
that its devaluation could be seen as an attractive takeover target
by another company.
Edelman was critical of contrarians who suggested that BP may be a
good buy now.
“I don’t play that game. I don’t know why you would either,”
Edelman told listens.
The financial adviser added that such an investment would be a
“follies game.” He reiterated that the key to successful investing
is diversification.
